DETAILED, REALISTIC PORTRAITS

Hi, welcome to my site. I hope I can be of help to you. By popular demand, my main subjects have been pet portraits but I am open to any enquiries for commissions. I strive to capture the character of all of my subjects in a traditional realistic style with lots of detail. I can promise you that I sketch and paint freehand, I do not use any tracing, copying or digital equipment at all, and I only use good quality materials to ensure a long life of your painting and it's colour permanence.

Paintings from your favourite photos

It is not very practical to have a painting commissioned from a live sitting. Solution?... Let me paint from your favorite photograph. I am happy to paint any subject (within reason!) and see every new commission as a challenge. My goal is to capture the likeness and personality of your loved one to be adored for many years. My style of painting is realistic and with fine detail. As such my work lends itself very well to portraits of pets, particularly dogs, so, if it is a dog portrait you want, you have come to the right place!

I painted Jasper for our Grandson Bryn. He is an old cat with a great character. I had not painted a fluffy white cat in acrylics before. Looking at the refernce photo I used, from a mobile phone, I found that there was not a lot of detail showing. I therefore printed the photo in black and white to enphasize the tonal values.

I think it shows a lot more definition of the features. I also zoomed in to find some detail of the fur. I realise that the final result does not look exactly as the original photo but, I tried to capture the character of Jasper as I know him.

How to commission a Painting...

Upload/Send me your photo/s and requirements for a quotation.
If you wish me to proceed, I will ask you for a small deposit, 10% of the full cost of the painting, which will later be offset upon payment.
I will upload/send you a photo of my sketch for you to approve the composition.
I will begin painting. Delivery will be subject to my workload at the time of your order. Please expect a minimum of three months for an oil painting.
I will upload/send you a photo of the finished painting for your approval.
Subject to your approval, you will then pay the balance owing after your deposit, plus any carriage/postage in full.
I will then send your painting to you.

Which Medium?...

Whatever medium I use, I always check each colour is rated high for permanence.

I use Gouache for smaller paintings, the finish is matt and normally looks better with a subject on a white background. A more modern, graphic style.
I usually use Acrylics for medium and larger paintings and particularly if a painting is required quickly. The finish is crisp, with a modern feel.
Oils are in a class of their own, the finish is luxurious and very traditional, like the old masters. As with Acrylics, I feel oils are suited to medium and larger paintings. Not suitable for commissions in a hurry as it takes a long time to produce an oil painting due to the drying times.

What my clients are saying

I have had three portraits of my dogs and can honestly say that you have captured their expression and the look in their eyes so well. The paintings have so much more feeling that the photograph.

Advice for your photos...

Try to capture your subject in a natural pose, one that you think depicts their personality. Get as close as you can to take the picture, I will need to see the detail, I can only paint what I can see. If the picture does not show enough detail, take extra -close up shots of the eyes, nose, ears and the coat. Please be aware colours can look different on photographs from real life. Also, the colour will be different indoors from outdoors. If you get a photograph of the colour you are happy with, it would be extremely useful. If you are local it may be possible for me to visit to take photos and meet the "portraitee" myself. If you are in any doubt, please contact me. Depending on the distance, I may be able to visit for a small fee to cover the costs.
